Victims of deadly Fourth Avenue’s raceway-like atmosphere showed up in force on Wednesday night to convince car-friendly members of Community Board 10 that they should approve a plan aimed at significantly slowing down traffic on the dangerous boulevard.

The city wants to make the two-mile stretch between 65th Street and Shore Road less of a kill zone by adding a bus-only lane on portions of it, cutting it down to one lane of traffic in each direction on others, and adding safety features such as Manhattan-style pedestrian fences and concrete islands in its heart — moves that backers say will save lives.

“How many more lives need to be sacrificed before something is done?” said Cindy Deng, the daughter-in-law of senior citizen who was struck and killed by a Cadillac at the corner of 82nd Street on May 2.

Fourth Avenue was named third-most dangerous block in the borough by pedestrian safety watchdogs, who claim four people have been killed on it between 2008 and 2010. This year, two more people were killed in Bay Ridge, but some residents who showed up at the public hearing on the plan Wednesday night still demand cars be allowed to move down the avenue quickly.

“I defy anybody in this room to drive down there at seven o’clock or eight o’clock or nine o’clock in the morning,” said Dan Texeira “It takes forever to get down Fourth Avenue now.”

Others argued that slowing traffic on Fourth Avenue would lead to drivers speeding down other, more residential thoroughfares, and another worried how impatient drivers would react to the changes.

“It’s going to cause road rage,” warned Fred Greco.

Road rage or not, victims and their family were firmly behind a plan they think will save lives.

“Failure to act will result in drivers continuing to use Fourth Avenue as a highway,” said Maureen Landers, who survived being struck by a speeding car on the avenue in 2009. “There will be more accidents, possibly more fatalities.”

CB10’s Traffic and Transportation Committee will vote on whether to support the reforms on June 10, and the issue will go before the full board on June 17. The neighborhood panel’s decision is only advisory, but the city has a history of following their recommendations.

Why don't we take away the driver's licenses of these idiots if they can't slow down. The naysayers seem to be making the argument that 4th Ave should be transformed into an unrestricted stretch of Autobahn... ya know, then there won't be speeding anywhere else.

What I am begging for, sir, is simply your pardon. I have to say that I'm growing tired of these reports from Bay Ridge, when there are unfortunate souls in other areas, such as Grand Army Plaza. Would you like to see some awful driving and poor decisions? I suggest Will Breadmen move to that area for a while. I'm sorry about my interruption, but somebody had to say this.

Just fix the timing of the lights and enforce the laws on jaywalking already. This won't cost as much as the plan to make it an inconvenience for motorists. In reality, this traffic calming will just lead to a cycle of generations of the next one saying that the traffic is too slow, and they will ask for it to be removed just to make it move faster. Anyway, 4th Avenue is a major thoroughfare, and it's one of the few local roads that commercial traffic can use, and they almost can't go anywhere else, because many of the side streets don't allow for them. On a side note, I cannot believe those who commented and made personal attacks on Allen Bortnick when you guys had your say on this while he had his.

Have you even looked at a map. 4th ave is not "of the few local roads that commercial traffic can use," 7th Ave IS.,

And "Just fix the timing of the lights" How do we do that on a two way street.

Also, I am a motorist too. I don't mind being inconvenienced a little if it means saving the lives of my neighbors children.

Make the changes already DOT. I emerge from the R train with thousands of other people, usually encountering cars zooming through red lights and speeding way past the limit. Safe streets for people to walk and move efficiently should be the top concern for planning--not that some cars can't continue to speed (against the law already).

How many speeding cars are the really let alone those that are running the red lights? That sounds like an exaggerated claim if you asked me. I can almost say the same thing about bicycles that do almost the same thing and probably more constantly. I wouldn't even be surprised if all of the victims who complain about how 4th Avenue probably all jaywalked hence placing themselves into harm's way. Overall, I do believe that everyone should follow the rules, and I am referring to all groups by mentioning this, not just a select group. Before you complain about motorists flouting the laws, start with yourselves first and practice what you preach, otherwise you just committed a double standard on this. On a side note, I have no idea who this Or person is nor have I met him.

Oh no. You ave never been to Bay Ridge! You get all your information from the media. But did you even read the article.

Traffic calming will in include pedestrian fences. That will stop jaywalking, Enforcement does not.
