A Sunset Park woman is in critical condition after a Queens driver in a box truck struck her as she was crossing the street just blocks from her home on Saturday, according to authorities.

The collision occurred April 27 just after 10:50 a.m., when 67-year-old Xiang Chen struck 72-year-old Youfeng Xu — who was crossing Seventh Avenue from the Sixth Avenue side toward the Eighth Avenue side — as Chen made a left in his truck from 55th Street onto Seventh Avenue, police said.

Emergency medical personnel found Xu on the pavement with severe head trauma before transporting her to NYU Langone Hospital-Brooklyn, where she remains in critical condition, according to police.

The Police Department’s Highway Collision Investigation Squad conducted an investigation at the scene, and cops cuffed Chen, charging him with failure to yield to a pedestrian and failure to use due care, officers said.

A rep for the department did not immediately respond to inquiries about whether or not police arrested Chen at the scene and whether or not Xu was crossing the street in the crosswalk or outside of it.

He was too old to be driving! Why do they let old people do this? Does he have driver license? He here illegal? Me want to know this.

The last time a cyclist killed someone in New York City was in 2014. Of the 754 pedestrians killed on city streets in the half decade before that, just two deaths were caused by cyclists. Maybe YOU should go back to your basement, Joey.

Shaddup fool. A woman is in a coma today after being hit by a speeding deranged spandex Nazi. It’s time to register and insure cyclists before they get away with maiming anyone else.

Nice attempt at hijacking this discussion. Here we are discussing the menace that cyclists that think laws do not apply to them inflict on the community and how they need to be brought to heel with registration and insurance.

You should be making sure the bell on your bike is working, instead of posting here. Also make sure you have done everything else you need to do to avoid getting summoned by the police. And make sure you pay all those outstanding fines, I’d hate to see a spineless jellyfish like you have to spend a weekend in central booking. Watch out for those checkpoints!!!

Mathematician from Brooklyn says:
Henry Ford (one of you) A basic understanding of statistics would tell you that you cannot compare car caused deaths to bike caused deaths one on one as you do above because there are 100s more cars on the road than there are bicycles.
May 2, 2019, 4:24 am
Gary from Fort Greene says:
Mathemetician - a direct comparison would be misleading, but if you have the data you could compare one against the other based on injuries and/or deaths per n vehicles in use. Getting trustworthy data could be tough.
