A truck driver struck a cyclist in Greenpoint on Thursday, hospitalizing him.

The motorist attempted to make a right turn onto Franklin Street off of Banker Street at 2:30 p.m., when he collided with the cyclist who was riding along Franklin Street’s northbound bike path, according to police.

The intersection where the collision occurred features a stop sign for Banker Street traffic seeking to merge onto Franklin Street, and forces motorists to cross over the perpendicular bike path to complete a turn in either direction onto the north-south thoroughfare.

Paramedics rushed the cyclist to Bellevue Hospital with a fractured ankle. The driver remained on the scene, and was issued multiple summonses, according to authorities.

The crash occurred as Mayor Bill de Blasio announced a renewed commitment to expanding the city’s bike lane network — a response to the dramatic uptick in citywide cyclist fatalities in 2019.

“The fact that this all happened in such a small amount of time — it’s a crisis and an emergency,” said de Blasio during the press conference.

Reasonable discourse

Henry Ford from Bay Ridge says:
Another self entitled motorist causing havoc on the streets. At least he'll be hit where it hurts, in the wallet. Pay attention when you are behind the wheel of a multi-ton vehicle.

Wilbur D. Horse from Funkytown says:
I just took a look at Google maps. Franklin and Banker form an A, like an upside down V, with Franklin on the left side of the A, and Banker on the right of that A. The "crossbar" of the A is Calyer. It is not possible to make a right turn from Banker to Franklin? Banker is to the RIGHT of Franklin. This "facts" here are totally befuddling, and, therefore, this new article is useless.

Last of the pragmatic from Park Slope says:
First, this was a terrible tragedy. Also I hate the drivers here, they’re the worst in the country. But this was an accident. The real culprit is this city’s pandering and mismanagement. The causes are horrible street designs nobody fixes for flow or safety. They build and enlarge more buildings not use the space to make streets wider or better designed and the construction clogs nearly every block of nyc. There are no spaces for loading anywhere because car drivers don’t want to give up any parking spaces and so there are double-parked trucks constantly everywhere especially Park Slope. They’re never ticketed in Park Slope, the rich get angry when their drapery maker can’t park in front of their brownstone like it’s Westchester and that’s their driveway. NYPD won’t ticket speeders. Period. NYC doesn’t have the political will for that, or for cracking down on unlicensed drivers. The city regulates Uber to the breaking point but don’t do jack to private citizen drivers. Require yearly tags like CA does and if tags aren’t current you tow them. Just like CA. No bike lanes will fix any of what I mentioned. They’ll do nothing in fact. Bicyclists, take some ownership of your own well being and others too. You’re acting so millennial. Be aware! Actually look around. No you don’t. I see you. For the love of god wear helmets. I’m seeing tons of you without helmets this summer. No bike lane saves you from cracking your head on the pavement and you don’t need a car to hit you for you to fall. You could be riding in a city of empty cars and still die if you don’t wear helmets and, again, very important, if you don’t LOOK OUT. No more ear buds. I swear the only reason bicyclists want designated lanes is to be entitled to ear buds.

Not an accident, it was a collision.

Hillary from Prison says:
Nothing that adult children do on bicycles can ever be their fault. So the word accident needs to be removed from the dictionary so you don’t offend them. And if you attempt to point out what they are doing wrong, you are biased.

Leif Ericsson 33rd from MNH, QNS BKLYN says:
A lot of NYC drivers are incompetent. I know this when I drive and see them run red lights, go to fast or not use their turn signal. I also see them when I bike, except then I don't have a seatbelt, airbag etc to protect me from them. What they do in Holland: "Dutch motorists are also trained for interaction with cyclists as part of their driver training when going for their driving license. For example, trainee motorists are trained to check and re-check their right-hand side for cyclists before making a turn to the right." Clearly 20-30% of NYC drivers don't even look. Though it must be said that about half of drivers in NYC are excellent.

And when adults attempt to point out what the manchildren on bikes are doing wrong, they stamp their feet and call you names, like all spoiled children do.

Pardon me, but I'm very confused by this "Hillary From Prison" character. She says one thing, and then she says something quite the opposite. Sometimes she even degrades herself. I hate to say this, but perhaps instead of being in prison, she should be evaluated for mental illness? Of course, this is just one suggestion from one man. His name is John Wasserman. -John Wasserman
